Ancestry DNA is now providing an Ethnicity breakdown by Parent
I noticed on my Ancestry DNA that there were several changes. First, let me be clear that my own DNA isn't on Ancestry. I use my fathers DNA for my paternal side (because the older the source, the better!) and I use my uncle's DNA for my maternal side.
This is interesting because I get to analyze results from both.

Ancestry can now tell you what percentage of a particular heritage comes from each side (caveat, it doesn't know which side is your mom or dad).
As an example, here is my father's overview:
And here is the breakdown:
It's only about 1%, and I still don't know the full story there but it is interesting.
While the usefulness of this in your overall research may be a bit up in the air at the moment, it is interesting to see the science of it all. And Ancestry pioneered this, which I think is neat.
By the way - my dad now shows ethnicity from "Basque". Ancestry defines this region as:
"Basque history has long been shrouded in mystery. The Basque country lies on the Bay of Biscay and in the western Pyrenees Mountains, with four provinces in Spain and three in France. The Basques have been living there longer than anyone can remember. Their language is probably the oldest in modern Europe and appears to be unrelated to any other known language in the world. Despite being an ancient people, the Basques currently have no nation of their own. They’re defined by being Basque—not by borders."
It's only about 1%, and I still don't know the full story there but it is interesting.
The Verge has a great article about this.
Ancestry DNA has helped me make connections in my genealogy work that I would never have thought possible. I highly recommend it - and I even recommend trying out a subscription for 6 months of so.
You can purchase Ancestry DNA from Amazon as well, and sometimes you can get it cheaper there than from Ancestry.com.
